Individuals battle with various sorts of difficulties and keeping in mind that there certain individuals who figure out how to conquer them, others are not all that fortunate and wind up ensnared in a snare of issues for their whole lifetime. In any case, as excruciating and risky as they seem to be, misfortunes are significant in that if an individual effectively defeats them, they become more grounded in character and as a person also. This paper is a conversation of the difficulties I have looked as an outside understudy having moved from Saudi Arabia to the United States. The paper will likewise address family, social and individual convention that are significant to my nation of starting point. Explicit difficulties I have confronted and how these encounters have made me a superior individual à à One of the significant difficulties looked by any universal understudy would be the issue of migrating to another nation to promote oneââ¬â¢s investigations (Long, 2005).â For my situation, it was the same since I have confronted various misfortunes some of which I despite everything battle to survive. My nation of starting point is Saudi Arabia, which implies that the significant language of correspondence is Arabic. Notwithstanding, with the movement to America, this implied I needed to learn English as a second language which is the primary language spoken by American residents. At first, learning another dialect was exceptionally testing since the language isn't even firmly identified with Arabic. Speaking with different understudies in class was extremely dangerous since I was unable to see very well what some of them were stating. Then again, I would think that its hard to look for a large portion of the things on the racks are named in English. Another significant difficulty I confronted is the way of life stun of being endlessly from a domain and individuals I had gotten used to interface with every day. The way of life of Saudi Arabia is a lot of unique in relation to what I have encountered here in the United States. The jobs of religion, sexual orientation, family and instruction all vary when I contrast them with that of the American culture. In Saudi Arabia, our way of life directs that individuals should live respectively in congruity as a family, however in America, this is altogether unique. I thought that it was exceptionally hard to conform to this life since it isn't what I was acclimated. Be that as it may, I have figured out how to conquer the vast majority of these misfortunes and they have added to making me a superior individual. For example, presently I can communicate in another dialect other than Arabic and I have encountered an alternate culture other than that one of my nation. A family, social or individual convention that is important to me à à In Saudi Arabia, the nation, principally contains an Islamic culture with pretty much every resident being a Muslim (Ham and Madden, 2004).à In this respect, there are numerous families, social or individual conventions that we maintain and accept contribute a ton in characterizing who we are as a country (Long, 2005).à One of the most significant custom to us is that ladies are not permitted to drive in Saudi Arabia. The purpose behind this is the Islamic foundation decided that it is a law that each lady ought to have a male watchman going with them any place they go (Ham and Madden, 2004).à To us, this custom is significant since it gives the man authority over her better half and family. On the off chance that a lady needs to drive, she can just do as such with the authorization of her better half who rather likes to drive her. Thusly, the Saudi Arabian culture guarantees that men are the top of the home while the lady is their assistant and needs to tune in to whatever he says. The individual I might want to go through a day with (living, expired or nonexistent) and why à à One of the individuals I might want to go through a day with must be my grandma who lamentably spent on five years back. She was one of my preferred family member and individual that I discovered fascinating to invest energy with. She generally offered me a great deal of guidance regarding life and how I should complete myself within the sight of others. What's more, my grandma guided me to remain solid in my confidence in Islam and to always remember to state my standard supplications consistently. Additionally, my grandma was a generally excellent cook who adored planning heavenly suppers at whatever point I went to visit her. After the food was prepared, I would assist her with serving it and we would both appreciate it as she gave me anecdotes about our way of life and how it began. She was an astute lady who knew a ton of things about existence in both the present and the past. In the event that she was alive today, I am certain I would in any case be appreciating her con versation without a doubt. Taking everything into account, attempting to defeat difficulties isn't exceptionally simple however once an individual makes to beat them, they become an a lot more grounded individual. For my situation, I have figured out how to beat difficulties identified with moving to the United States alone, which has made me a vastly improved individual. Truth be told, I have more companions who are not from my nation of cause. Moreover, I have clarified why the custom of ladies is imperative to Saudi Arabian residents since it is one of the manners in which that men can accept all out power over their ladies. I have likewise refered to that my grandma was one of the individuals that I would want to invest more energy with, were she alive today. All things considered, it is these events that have added to molding the individual I am today. References Ham, A., Brekhus, M., and Madden, A. (2004).à Saudi Arabia. Footscray, Vic: Lonely Planet. There are numerous things that the informant can uncover, for example, the overstepping of laws, uncovering misrepresentation, debasement, or wellbeing and security infringement. These charges can communicated to the individuals that run the organization or association and they can be communicated to the outside world, for example, the media or law implementation. The informant typically faces retaliation from their organization, related associations, or some of the time from the law.Whistle blowing happens when individuals get captured among business and social obligation. They need to choose what is best for the business and what is best for the world. In the Insider Big tobacco denies that nicotine is an addictive medication. Jeff Wigand is a tobacco official and needs to choose whether or not give a meeting with an hour about cigarettes and if nicotine is and a ddictive medication or not. Jeff consented to a privacy arrangement with his organization saying that he won't uncover any data about nicotine.Even however he is terminated and gets passing dangers, Jeff chooses to give the meeting and whistle pass up uncovering the realities about nicotine that his organization was stowing away. There are three components in whistle blowing and when these components are joined they make whistle blowing harsh and aversion full. They are dispute, allegation, and break of steadfastness. Difference is a conflict with a predominant or the dominant part which can be difficult to accomplish in a work environment.Whistle blowingââ¬â¢s disagree is revealing insight into a hazard and doling out duty regarding the hazard. The informant additionally blames somebody for who is regularly higher on the company pecking order than him. At the point when he charges this individual it resembles he considers that individual a foul and that gets the most grounded re sponse from that individual and they attempt to shield themselves. The informant is getting out his own associates and this is viewed as a break of dependability since he has certain commitments to his partners and this devotion is set against the open interest. There are a wide range of perspectives on when it is suitable to whistle blow. Michael McFarland utilizes an investigation by Simon, Powers, and Gunneman that there are four factors that must be available so as to ethically expect somebody to proceed to support someone else. They are that there is a basic requirement for the assistance, is inside the ââ¬Å"network of social relationsâ⬠which implies an individual obligation to family, companions, etc, the capacity to help without harm to self, and the absence of different wellsprings of help.McFarland states recommends that designers ought to be held to a better quality of social duty than conventional people however the duty ought to be scattered among the entirety of the individuals from the building society rather than only an individual specialist. He utilizes the case of Kitty Genovese. Kitty was killed and numerous individuals in her high rise either watched or tuned in and sat idle. It has been contended that had the neighbors prohibited together they could have forestalled the homicide. McFarland utilizes this guide to show that when no different wellsprings of help are accessible that specialists should assume liability by banding together.McFarland urges architects to change their considering singular duty to the obligation of the designing calling on a more extensive level. Richard De George expresses that dependability to the organization is the most significant thing for an individual to have. He gives three necessities for an individual to have passability to whistle blow which are as per the following. On the off chance that damage to the open will be serous and significant, if the individual educates their bosses regarding the issu e and nothing is done, and if the individual advises everybody above them on the participate stepping stool and nothing is done.George additionally gives necessities for when whistle blowing is an ethical commitment of an individual. They incorporate the three recently expressed prerequisites and that the individual has documentation about their anxiety and that there is solid proof that making their interests know to the open will stop the issue. This appears as though great measures for an individual to whistle blow yet this methodology can set aside a long effort to finish in light of the fact that occasionally educating all the individuals over the informant on the collaborate stepping stool can be a broad procedure. This caused the Challenger disaster. The transport that was propelled preceding the challenger had many time on account of climate and mechanical components. NASA didn't need defer the dispatch of the Challenger so the platform could be renovated on schedule thus it would dispatch simultaneously as President Reagan gave his State of the Union location. The Challenger utilizes strong rocket promoters with strong fuel to defeat Earthââ¬â¢s gravity. These supporters are gathered with four portions that are held together by two O rings. The O rings shield hot gas from getting away from the motor.Heat clay is utilized to isolate the elastic rings and the hot gases. Architects find that the O rings will most likely be unable to keep the supporters fixed at temperatures lower than 40o F and they brought this up to their bosses. The bosses differ and felt that the O rings would hold paying little heed to the temperature. The night prior to the dispatch the temperature dropped enormously beneath the security furthest reaches of the O rings. Ice framed on the cushion and some fell on a sponsor cooling it to 28o F making the seal fall flat. The bus was propelled and fifty nine seconds after the fact the bus exploded.Had the specialists whistle blowed a s opposed to raising the issue the entirety of their bosses then the bus may have not propelled. While they needed more low temperature information to demonstrate that it was risky to dispatch, they additionally needed more information to demonstrate that it was sheltered enough to dispatch. Had they gone to the media there may have been sufficient open help against the dispatch for NASA to defer it. We will never know. What we can be sure of is that educating all regarding the engineerââ¬â¢s bosses took excessively long and the specialists needed more an ideal opportunity to attempt to discover another approach to stop the bus launch. The National Society of Professional Engineersââ¬â¢ Code of Ethics for engineers has six basic guns that express that for designers to satisfy their expert obligations they should, hold vital the wellbeing, wellbeing, and government assistance of the general population, perform benefits just in territories of their ability, issue open proclamatio ns just in a target and honest way, represent every business or customer as devoted operators or trustees, keep away from tricky acts, and behave decently, capably, morally, and legitimately to improve the respect, notoriety, and helpfulness of the profession. The first rule expresses that an architect has the obligation to the publicââ¬â¢s security, wellbeing and government assistance before an obligation to a customer or manager. This keeps a specialist secured in case of whistle blowing. A few codes even go similarly as teaching or repudiating the engineerââ¬â¢s permit if the designer neglects to report something that the architect knew was not in the publicââ¬â¢s best interest.Having this standard in the Code of Ethics has help legitimize whistle passing up engineers and has the courts frequently side with engineer, overruling classification understandings and obligations to businesses that in the past would have kept the specialist from standing up. I accept that whistl e blowing is a fundamental piece of being an architect. It gives the architect some control over the organization or association that has recruited them.If the organization fears that the specialist may proceed to tell the open things that the organization does that are destructive to the general population, the organization will attempt to abstain from doing things that are hurtful to people in general. While whistle blowing is intermittently offensive and difficult to do, it is regularly a need. There are organizations on the planet that solitary consideration about creation a benefit and don't stress over the publicââ¬â¢s health. These organizations need the assistance of specialists to structure their tasks which gives the designers knowledge that the open won't have. While the specialists have dedication to the organization that they work for, it is likewise the engineersââ¬â¢ obligation to people in general to ensure that the organization demonstrations in the publicâ⬠â¢s wellbeing. What's more, if the designers can not persuade the organization that what they are doing isn't right, at that point the time has come to carry the demonstration to the publicââ¬â¢s consideration. He joined the movement while he was at the University of Witwatersrand studying law, in 1942. Together with other young people, they formed a movement referred to as African National Congress Youth League with ANC. The aim of the youth movement was to transform ANC, which had failed to achieve a number of goals for long. Under the leadership of the youth movement, ANC adopted new strategies to reach out to millions of Africans in both urban and rural areas, who have been oppressed by the apartheid regime (Limb 34). They urged people to agitate for their rights through methods such as boycott, strike, civil disobedience among others. The policy goals of the movement were to call for full citizenship, redistribution of resources, trade union rights, and free education without discriminations. Mandela advocated and supported n on-violent approaches of defiance against the government. In 1952, he and other young leaders started a defiance campaign and they launched congress of the people in 1955. ââ¬Å"Mandela was the coordinator of the massive 1952 Campaign of Defiance against Unjust Lawsâ⬠(Limb 50). He also used his profession to fight for the end of apartheid. He joined hands with Oliver Tambo to form a law firm which offered low cost services to Africans in need of legal counsel. This led to his arrest in 1956 and being charged as perpetrator of treason. In 1961, Nelson Mandela changed his philosophy of non-violent protests and declared that the only arm struggle would assist in the achievement of the objectives. He co-founded a militia under ANC whose role was to be involved in a guerilla war against the government. He also successfully called for a nationwide workersââ¬â¢ strike in the same year. The government was feeling the head of the new strategies and resolved to disrupt the leadershi p by arresting and imprisoning the leaders (Ellis 657ââ¬â676). Mandela and ten other black leaders were put into trial and convicted to life imprisonment. He was jailed at Robben Island for 18 years out of the 27 years he stayed in prisons. Due to the poor conditions the black prisoners were kept under Mandela suffered from tuberculosis and received relatively poor services from prison staff members. However, he successfully received a Bachelor of Law through the correspondence of the University of London. In 1981, Gordon Winter, who was a senior South African intelligence agent, wrote a memo on how to kill Mandela. In this case, Mandela would have been declared to have escaped from the jail and shoot in a recapture mission. However, this plot was despised by the British intelligence; hence,Mandela continued to stay in prison. He and other African leaders were transferred to Pollsmoor prison to facilitate communication and interaction with the government. In 1985, the presiden t offered Nelson the opportunity to be released in exchange to preaching peace and renounce the armed struggle. However, Mandela rejected the offer by President Botha. At this time, pressure had mounted from governments in the local and international scenes for Mandela and other leaders to be released. Botha suffered stroke before releasing the leaders and was replaced by Frederik Willem, who announced the release of the leaders in 1990. This was followed by unbanning of the ANC and removed restriction to political parties and the freedom of expression. The release of ANC leaders gives the opportunity for the leaders to fight for constitutional reform in South Africa, to give the black people who were the majority the right to vote. Mandela was elected to be the president of the ANC and Oliver Tambo as the national chairperson. ANC called upon the international community to support their agitation for the African rights. Africans agitated for a complete transfer of power from the w hites while the whites wanted the power sharing. Mandela as the African leader had to strike a balance. He embarked on negotiations and convinced the African people that it was not possible or right to do away with the whites. The negotiations were completed in 1993, and the first general election was held in 1994. Mandela was elected the president and inaugurated as the first black president, Klerk the former white president become the deputy president (Finlayson 100). Mandela ruled from 1994 to 1999 during the period when he strove to bring about reconciliation between the Africans and the whites. He encouraged the African people to forgive and work together with the whites who had over the years despised and mistreated them. The aim of Mandela was to ensure that peace prevails and South Africa became an internationally respected country, and the need to spearhead economic growth and development (Kalumba 161ââ¬â171). During his inauguration, Mandela had a powerful statement a nd said ââ¬Å"I stand here before you filled with deep pride and joy-pride in the ordinary people of this country. It is time to heal the old wounds and build up a new South Africaâ⬠(Finlayson 100). In 1996, the new constitution was adopted where the rule of the majority was recognized and the freedom of expression which had been suppressed by the apartheid. Mandela could not serve for another term; he had achieved a lot in bringing apartheid to an end and reconciliation of the citizens. He had also made South Africa one of the most respected countries on the map of the world. Even after retiring Mandela remained very instrumental to both ANC and leadership. In other words, he was a senior elder of the nations and his voice was highly appreciated. The estrangement from active politics opened the opportunity for Mandela to serve in another area. He formed a foundation through which he collected money and resources to build learning institutions and health care facilities, par ticularly in rural areas. He also participated in the international community as a peace and reconciliation mediators (Limb 123). For example, he participated actively as mediator in Burundiââ¬â¢s civil war. One of the areas where he was very devoted was on the fight against HIV/AIDS. ââ¬Å"In 2003, Mandela stated that he had not done enough to fight AIDS, while he was the president. Sexism in Brazil Brazil is one of the most known countries not only for their vast population but for their strong culture, identity, and uniqueness. Brazil is one of the largest countries located in the continent South America. The capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, which is the most popular city in the country for obvious reasons. Most commonly known for the statue that overlooks the entire city day and night, Christ the Redeemer. The statue represents a strong symbol of the religion Christianity across the world, and also shows how passionate their country is for their religion. The statue has also become a cultural icon not only in Brazil but all over the world. According toEncyclopedia Britannica ââ¬Å"It was completed in 1931 and stands 98 feet tall, its horizontally outstretched arms spanning 92 feet. The statue, made of reinforced concrete clad in a mosaic of thousands of triangular soapstone tiles, sits on a square stone pedestal base about 26 feet high, which itself is situated on a deck a top the mountainââ¬â¢s summit.â⬠(Murray, 2011) Another major urban populated city in Brazil is known as Sao Paulo. Sexism Sexual Harassment In Brazil Just to give more background knowledge on the history of Brazil, according to academic article A Study Of The Country Brazil, ââ¬Å"Because of the rapid growth experienced by this countryin terms of urban development, industrialisation and population at the beginning of the 21st century, Brazil is facing a number of social, environmental and political challenges.â⬠(Meyer, 2010) The countries population at this moment is estimated to be around 209.3 million people according to United States census bureau. As each year continues to pass us the more and more that number rises. Also according to, A Study Of The Country Brazil, ââ¬Å"However, it is also because of this growth that it is doing so well in terms of its economy. In fact, it is one of the worldââ¬â¢s largest andmost significant economies. It is also the only Portuguese-speaking country in both North and South America.â⬠(Meyer, 2010) These heritages date all the way back to the 1700ââ¬â¢s, decades andcenturies ago. Apart from Brazilââ¬â¢s huge population and being geographically huge, Brazil is veryunique just as its people. Because according to, A Study Of The Country Brazil, ââ¬Å"It comprises dense rain forests and jungles, expanses of coastline, towering mountains, oceanic archipelagos (or clusters of islands), rivers, scrublands and rolling plains. Because of such a variation in habitats available to plants and animals, Brazil boasts a rich array of fauna and flora.â⬠(Meyer, 2010) Going back to this countryââ¬â¢s great size and population, their population is made up with avast amount of women. Lately in Brazil their women have been overlooked not only in their everyday lives, but also as an equal part to their society. Not only in Brazil has this problem beenoccuring, itââ¬â¢s actually a worldwide movement by women. Most commonly known by the #Metoomovements going around all over the Unit ed States of America. Sadly Brazil doesnââ¬â¢t have the same appeal and attention as the United States does, and many women in Brazil are being Sexism Sexual Harassment In Brazil 3overlooked and not having any say or any representation in their government. Women basically do not have any equal rights as men do and they deserve to be treated equally just as every other women in this world does. One of the most important people playing an enormous role in this sexism issue in Brazil is the face of the country and fairly new elected president Jair Bolsonaro. According to BBC news ââ¬Å"Jair Bolsonaro is a retired military officer and more famously known for being a Brazilianpolitician. He has served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies, representing the one of the biggest cities in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, since 1991.â⬠(Arnold, October 2018) Lately since President Bolsonaroââ¬â¢s election he hasnââ¬â¢t been looked at too great in the mediaââ¬â¢s eyes and has seemed to be in the news for all the wrong reasons. Many beg to comparisons of United States president Donald Trump in same attitude, behavior and most importantly ideas. Also according to BBC news ââ¬Å"However critics are worried by his praise of Brazils former dictatorship, and by his comments on race, women and homosexuality. In one infamous incident in 2015 he told a fellow lawmaker she was too ugly to rape.â⬠(Arnold, October 2018) Since then media and other outlet sources have deemed President Bolsonaro as Trump of the Tropics. President Bolsonaro continuous controversial comments to the media, his populist approach to the way he looks and handles politics and also pro-gun stance has not helped out the sexism problem at all in Brazil, if anything it has added to it much more and made it much more difficult to help resolve. As of August 31st 2016 , the entire country of Brazil has been under construction, since the impeachment of their former president Dilma Rousseff. Mrs. Dilma was a Brazilian economist, she was the perfect leader Brazil needed and was more than fit to run office. From those articles we Sexism Sexual Harassment In Brazil 7used articles 7 and 19.Article 7 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states ââ¬Å"All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.â⬠(United Nations, 2017) Which means all people no matter color nor race are equal and under the law it prevents discrimination against people of all kinds. So now knowing the true meaning behind article 7 the question remains of how are afro-latina women in Brazil being discriminated against? Previously stated in 2017 on The International Motherââ¬â¢s day he said ââ¬Å" I am absolutely convinced,[that I know], how much a woman does for the household, for the home, creating a home for the children, and if society somehow goes well and the children grow-up well, it is because of its formidable home training and, surely, it is not the men who do it, itââ¬â¢s the womenâ⬠(C.F.F.P., 2017) For a current president to say such rash sayings about the women of Brazil only shows the amount of disrespect that is hidden behind scenes. Not only is it disrespectful but, hurtful to the working class of women who actually are being undermined just by him sharing his thoughts on what he thinks the women do in soci ety. It does not stop there in did you know that the legal age is 18 for women to be allowed to marry but, the ââ¬Å"law allows girlsto marry at 16 with parental consentâ⬠(Tavares, 2017). Wonder why women are given the option to be married off at such an young age and the option to be married if happened to be pregnant? The answer is simple women are not set to be put at the same standards as men. That is why there is always an option to be married off no matter the age and circumstances. Also it only shows that they believe women are not capable of living without an man which is indirectly Sexism Sexual Harassment In Brazil 8discriminating against women which violates article 7. Another example of the discrimination women face is the act of sexual harassment. The ââ¬Å"domestic workers, who are predominantly Afro-Brazilian, have been systematically harassed by their male employers. This centuries-old power play dates back to slavery.â⬠(Caldwell, 2018). There has been thousands of women who continue to face these hardships with the help of no one, the only option is to stay quite. What is the cause of all this? It is simple they are women they are looked down upon when it comes to their social status. They do not have enough power alone to change the outcome so it makes them an easier target to discriminate against. The next article that the afro-Brazilian women used to their full advantage is article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states ââ¬Å"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.â⬠(United Nations, 2017) In other words it the right to access information of choice and the of spread the information however you may want. That is exactly what the afro-brazilian women do in order to spread the information of the hoffric events they go through. The difficulty afro-Brazilian women face when it comes to women sharing what is happening to them is almost unreal to the extent of how these acts are even still going on. In 2015 there was a campaign that was started in the United States called #MeToo which laterd on got adopted by the women of brazil. Named the ââ¬Å"#MeuPrimeiroAssedio, or #MyFirstHarrassment. In its first five days, the hashtag racked up 82,000 tweets detailing the chronic sexual harassment of women in this South American nation. It soon spread across Latin America in Spanish translation as #MiPrimerAcosoâ⬠(Caldwell, 2018). This was the only humane way women could use the law to their advantage is thanks to article 19. Also not only Sexism Sexual Harassment In Brazil 9did they use article 19 to their advantages, but they were able to put out such information that only a afro-Brazilian could have known about like what healthcare in Brazil actually is and how if happened to afro-Brazilian plastic surgery is almost forced upon them. Afro-Brazilian women had faced all types of difficulties even healthcare which were free nationwide were going againstthem. For example ââ¬Å"black women are two and a half times more likely to die from an abortion than white personâ⬠, why is that? (Caldwell, 2018) Women of such color are not made to be put at such a higher priority so they are put last given the worse attention to. Also to add salt to the wound afro-Brazilian women features are not even supported. Even ââ¬Å"medical doctors may neglect black Brazilian women, but plastic surgeons pursue them. Since the 1960s, Brazilian cosmetic surgery has been included in Brazil Nationalhealth care systemâ⬠which practically screams out to those women of color that a more European look is more ââ¬Å"naturalâ⬠to have(Caldwell, 2018).When coming to a humane solution to cause less of a problem with the government that is in their rights is to use social media as they were doing. Using social actually a lot easier than most make it seem because there is so much information being put out for anyone disposal. As far as afro-Brazilian women being to use the internet they should continue to work on the instagram campaign they started called ##MeuPrimeiroAssedio. This allowed them to put i nformation of what has been going in Brazil with no problem with the government. This movement on instagram has racked up too over 85,000 retweets and it has gotten a lot of young activist attention which is a positive outcome. Because of this day and age kids happen to rule the internet and anything they see and what to draw attention it is possible because of how much of an influence kids have. Not only kids influence on the internet, but since the youth is next up they have such a big part on how the governments handle situations that may affect them. Sexism Sexual Harassment In Brazil 10One of the most beautifulest places in the world also known as Brazil with the most diverse cultural ever are even facing hardships when it comes to respecting the afro-Brazilian women of the country. Even with all the mistakes and unfairness their women face their is no limit to how potential the country has to change for the better of the economy or even for the people sake. But women are facing unjust behavior towards them for the sake of what ? Something has to change. Reference Caldwell, K.L. Hauser does concede that Habermasââ¬â¢ ideas about the public sphere are meant to focus solely on the bourgeois public sphere and not include all public spheres; however, Habermasââ¬â¢ critics have approached his model as universal, so it needs to be examined, contextually, as an approach to universally understanding public spheres (47-48). Because Hauserââ¬â¢s approach to the public sphere is more dynamic than Habermasââ¬â¢, by that I mean that it purposefully engages multiple public spheres- their individual autonomy as well as their influence on other public spheres- differences between the two rationales are presented. Hauser points to six crucial differences, where he feels that Habermas missed the mark at understanding the transformation of the public sphere. Hauser is concerned with how discourse ââ¬Å"realisticallyâ⬠happens within the public sphere, whereas, he argues, Habermasââ¬â¢ argument is contingent on the existence of ââ¬Å"ideal speechâ⬠(46). Hauserââ¬â¢s first problem with Habermasââ¬â¢ theory of the public sphere is that in order for Habermasââ¬â¢ ideas to work, they need to be the only public sphere, that is, a universal public sphere. This is not accurate of how discourse functions. Many discourse communities or public spheres function on their own and have influence on each other. A good example of this would be near the beginning (pg.16), when all of the townspeople from Eliezerââ¬â¢s town were forced onto the train. They were forced into tight holding quarters, werenââ¬â¢t offered food or water or any type of consolation. This inhumane act created a dystopia which was extremely disparate from vernonhamilton1946http://www.blogger.com/profile/17360454330130153249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8048443042540068253.post-64102373742388215292020-05-06T07:20:00.001-07:002020-05-06T07:20:22.556-07:00Reactions of Carbonyls free essay sample While most carbonyl functional groups share these two properties, within the carbonyl family of compounds, there are significant differences in reactivity. Aldehydes are generally more reactive than ketones and more easily oxidized. Carbonyls directly bonded to aromatic groups are generally less relative than Carbonyls that are directly bonded to alkyl substituents. In this experiment, we will perform each reaction on the known compounds that correspond to each chemical test first, to determine whether the reagents are working and to help you interpret a positive or a negative test. It is important that after the tests, the unknown sample will not be able to be unequivocally determined. Results: During this experiment, there were three different tests that were completed to determine what compound the unknown sample was. I started off with unknown sample #5 which was clear in color. The first test completed was the iodoform test. Once all three of the test tubes contained 2 mL of 5% NaOH and 3 drops of the unknown, 3-pentanone, or acetophenone, iodine solution was added by the drop until the yellow color of the iodine was slightly visible. We will write a custom essay sample on Reactions of Carbonyls or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The test tube containing the unknown and 3-pentanone only needed 3 drops each while acetophenone required 11 drops. The test tube containing acetophenone tested positive by forming a white/yellow precipitate at the bottom of the test tube. The unknown sample and 3-pentanone never changed color which means they tested negative. The Benedicts test was completed next because it had to sit in the hot water bath for 10 minutes. After 3 drops of the compounds (unknown, glucose, and benzaldehyde) were added into the test tube, 2 mL of ethanol were then mixed in. The next step was the addition of 1 mL of Benedicts solution to each test tube. The three test tubes were all blue in color before entering the hot water bath. After 7 minutes in the hot water bath, the only test tube to test positive (the blue solution actually turned a dark red color) was the test tube containing glucose. The test tubes containing the unknown and benzaldehyde did not change color once in the hot water bath thus resulting in a negative test result. The final test that was completed was the chromic acid test. Once 3 drops of the compound (unknown, benzaldehyde, and 3-pentanone) were added to the test tube, 1 mL of reagent grade acetone was mixed with the compound. Next, 1 drop of chromic acid (orange/yellow color) was added into the three test tubes. The test tubes containing the unknown and benzaldehyde compounds turned a greenish/blueish color which resulted in a positive test. The test tube containing 3-pentanone never changed color, so this resulted in a negative test. The following results stated above are located in a table which is included in the observations. Conclusion: The Benedicts test was used in order to determine if the unknown solution was either an aliphatic aldehyde or an aromatic aldehyde. The oxidizing agent in Benedictââ¬â¢s reagent is a water soluble complex formed between cupric ions (Cu 2+) and citrate ions. An aliphatic aldehyde that is added to Benedictââ¬â¢s reagent is oxidized to the corresponding carboxylic acid and Cu2+ is reduced to the cuprous (Cu+) in Cu2O. In a positive test the blue color of the reagent turns greenish and a reddish precipitate of cuprous oxide deposits in the tube. Benedictââ¬â¢s reagent oxidizes aliphatic aldehydes but cannot oxidize aromatic aldehydes. The Reaction is as followed: The Iodoform test may be used to distinguish between methyl ketones and no methyl ketones. When iodine and OH- are added to a methyl ketone, a yellow precipitate called ââ¬Å"iodoform (CHI3) is synthesized. One must be careful as some secondary alcohols, ethanol, and acetaldehydes may also give a positive test. Non methyl ketones will not form a yellow precipitate. A methyl ketone will react in the following manner with the I2 and OH-. The Chromic test is based on the reduction of chromium (IV), which is orange, to chromium (III), which is green, when an alcohol is oxidized by the reagent. A change in color of the reagent from orange to green represents a positive test. Primary alcohols are oxidized by the reagent to carboxylic acids: secondary alcohols are oxidized to ketones. Tertiary alcohols are not oxidized at all by the reagent. Hence, the reaction can be used to distinguish tertiary alcohols from primary and secondary alcohols. Questions: 1. Using chemical tests only, how would you distinguish between the following pairs of compounds? a. 2-methyl-2-propanol and butanal (Chromic Test) b. Benzaldehyde and propanal (Iodoform Test) c. 2-pentanone and 3-pentanone (Iodoform Test) 2. Why does Benedictââ¬â¢s test give a positive result for aliphatic aldehydes, but not aromatic aldehydes? a. The reason is Benedictââ¬â¢s reagent oxidizes aliphatic aldehydes, but cannot oxidize aromatic aldehydes. vernonhamilton1946http://www.blogger.com/profile/17360454330130153249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8048443042540068253.post-16116466957152110752020-05-06T04:23:00.001-07:002020-05-06T04:23:09.759-07:00Lived Experiences of Hrm Graduates in Applying for a Job free essay sample CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND This chapter presents the Introduction, Statement of the Problem, Hypothesis/Assumption, Scope and Delimitation of the Study, Significance of the Study and the Definition of Terms. Introduction Hospitality is the relationship between a guest and a host, or the act or practice of being hospitable. Specifically, this includes the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers, resorts, membership clubs, conventions, attractions, special events, and other services for travelers and tourists. Hospitality can also mean generously providing care and kindness to whoever is in need. Nowadays, the country generates more than 120,000 Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) graduates every year. Most of the HRM graduates also need additional skills training to be able to qualify for employment here in the Philippines and overseas. It is a proof that the boost of competency in hospitality industry. Consequently, the curriculum used to prepare the students in this field should be design to fit the demands of todayââ¬â¢s industry. This study aims to find the Employability of BSHRM Graduates of Trinity University of Asia: Implications to Curriculum Enhancement to layout an effective plan for reforming the hotel and restaurant management curriculum of the university. BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM The Philippine tourism flourished in the 1970s and early 1980s and signs of a faster growth appeared in the early 1990s. Considered the third-largest English-speaking country in the world, the Philippines offers world-class facilities and services excellent accommodations, fine restaurants, modern shopping centers and communication services, efficient congress and exhibition organizers and professional tour operators. This gave the Department of Tourism a reason to forecast a positive outlook for the future years. This boosted the number of students taking up Hotel and Restaurant Management course and also the schools or universities who are offering Hotel and Restaurant Management course. One of which is Trinity University of Asia who started its College of Hospitality and Tourism Management in 1996. Nowadays, Hotel and Restaurant Management graduates are in demand not only here in the Philippines but also in other countries, in spite of being in demand other graduates of Hotel and Restaurant Management (2011) in Trinity University of Asia are still unemployed, and this made the researchers to be curious about The employability of Hotel and Restaurant Management graduates of 2011 in Trinity University of Asia. The researchers want to know the percentage of employability of the graduates in their chosen fields either lodging and accommodation or food and beverage service, As well as if they are prepared enough based on their trainings, experiences, and learning in Trinity University of Asia. The Researchers, as being part of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management are eager to finish this study to benefit future researchers, students, faculties, administrations or readers. We cant afford to focus on the well-being of other countries because we arent in the best condition either. We have things like homelessness, the recession, world-wide hunger, and other burdens to take care of in our own country. The United States is already trillions of dollars in debt and struggling trying to come up for air. I think that we should take care of our own first before we try to take care f other affairs in different countries other than our own. As of now, we still have a high number of unemployed people in the United States and this causes then to have to receive unemployment which puts the government farther into debt. Plus, jobs are steadily closing down so theres really now security if you are working because it can vanish in the blink of an eye. We will write a custom essay sample on Policies or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The money to pay this unemployment has to come from somewhere, so the government has to go deeper into debt by borrowing in order to pay this money to its own citizens. Unless, we can get this ountry back on track we shouldnt even think about trying to help out another country because Im sure if the shoe was on the other foot they would help their country out first as well. No matter what state you live in or go to you will always see homeless people and people that are hungry. Even some of the ones that have Jobs still live in poverty. They either dont have the education to qualify them for a better job or they have the education and still cant get a Job in their field which makes them have to settle for what they can get Just to make ends meet. Instead of trying to feed ids in Africa and different places, we need to take that money and food and feed the starving people we have in our own country. At least, this would keep everything right here and if we do go into a little debt we can look around and see it was for a good cause because our people benefited from it. Then, theres the government shutdown that took place over something as simple as a healthcare plan al because one party didnt want to break. That was very ignorant when some people dont know where their next dollar will come from and they are complaining over a healthcare bill. A lot f people went weeks without getting a pay check during this time and didnt know exactly when they would get paid. Senior citizens were a nervous wreck because they didnt know if they would receive their Social Security benefits because of the shutdown. Why would you scare your citizens like this all because of stubbornness? It seems like every year things are going more and more downhill for the United States, so I stand firm on my answer and say no I think that we should take care of our own and let those other countries take care of their own as well. Its important to not only explain that the book must be looked at through the context of the time period but also what Twain was trying to do with his story. He was trying to reveal the plight of the slave and he was doing so with the vernacular of the time. Students may make wisecracks, but its important to address their humor with information. Students need to understand the words meaning and Twains reasons for using it. These conversations are difficult to have because they are controversial and many people are very uncomfortable with the n word- for good reason. Due to its origins in slavery and racism, it is often the topic of disgruntled phone calls from parents. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the 4th most banned bookà in schools according to Banned in the U.S.A. by Herbert N. Foerstal. In 1998 three new attacks arose to challenge its inclusion in education. Reasons for Banned Books Is censorship in schools good? Is it necessary to ban books? Each person answers these questions differently. This is the core of the problem for educators. Books can be found offensive for many reasons. Here are just some reasons taken from Rethinking Schools Online: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. Reason: Rape scene, anti-white.Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Reason: Profanity.Go Ask Alice by Anonymous. Reason: Drug use, sexual situations, profanity.A Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Newton Peck. Reason: Depiction of pigs mating and being slaughtered. More recent books that were challenged according to the American Library Association include the Twilight saga due to its religious viewpoint and violence and The Hunger Games because it was unsuited to the age group, sexually explicit and too violent. Many ways exist to ban books. Our county has a group which reads the questionable book and determines whether its educational value exceeds the weight of the objections against it. However, schools can ban books without this lengthy procedure. They just choose not to order the books in the first place. This is the situation in Hillsborough County, Florida. As reported in the St. Petersburg Times, one elementary school will not stock two of the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling because of the witchcraft themes. As the Principal explained it, the school knew they would get complaints about the books so they did not buy them. Many people, including the American Library Association, has spoken out against this. There is an article by Judy Blume on the website for the National Coalition Against Censorship to be very interesting. Its title: Is Harry Potter Evil? The question that faces us in the future is when do we stop? Do we remove mythology and Arthurian legends because of its references to magic? Do we strip the shelves of medieval literature because it presupposes the existence of saints? Do we remove Macbeth because of the murders and witches? Most would say there is a point where we must stop. But who gets to pick the point? Proactive Measures an Educator Can Take Education is not something to be feared. There are enough hurdles in teaching with which we must deal. So how can we stop the above situation from occurring in our classrooms? Here are just a few suggestions: Choose the books you use wisely. Make sure that they fit nicely into your curriculum. You should have evidence which you can present that the books you are using are necessary for the student. If you are using a book that you know has caused concerns in the past, try to come up with alternative novels that students can read.Make yourself available to answer questions about the books you have chosen. In the very beginning of the school year, introduce yourself to parents atà an open houseà and tell them to call you if they have any concerns. If a parent calls you there will probably be less of a problem then if they call administration.Discuss the controversial issues in the book with the students. Explain to them the reasons those parts were necessary for the authors work.Have an outside speaker come to class to discuss concerns. For example, if you are readingà Huckleberry Finn, get a Civil Rights Activist to give a presentation to students about racism. Final Word Ray Bradburyà describes a situation in theà coda toà Fahrenheit 451. It is about a future where all books are burned because the people have decided that knowledge brings pain. It is far better to be ignorant than knowledgeable. Bradburys coda discusses the censorship that hes faced. He had a play that he sent to a university to be produced. They sent it back because it had no women in it. This is the height of irony. Nothing was said about the content of the play or the fact that there was a reason it featured only men. They did not want to offend a certain group at the school: women. Is there isà a place for censorshipà and banning of books? Its hard to say that children should read certain books in certain grades, but education is not to be feared. vernonhamilton1946http://www.blogger.com/profile/17360454330130153249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8048443042540068253.post-87783356154971927282020-03-01T02:24:00.001-08:002020-03-01T02:24:03.243-08:00Word Order in English SentencesWord Order in English Sentences Word orderà refers to the conventional arrangement of words in a phrase, clause, or sentence. Compared with many other languages, word order in English is fairly rigid. In particular, the order of subject, verb, and object is relatively inflexible. Examples and Observations I cant see the point of Mozart. Of Mozart I cant see the point. The point of Mozart I cant see. See I cant of Mozart the point. Cant I of Mozart point the see . . . I cant see the point of Mozart.à (Sebastian Faulks, Engleby. Doubleday, 2007)[A] characteristic of modern English, as of other modern languages, is the use of word-order as a means of grammatical expression. If in an English sentence, such as The wolf ate the lamb, we transpose the positions of the nouns, we entirely change the meaning of the sentence; the subject and object are not denoted by any terminations to the words, as they would be in Greek or Latin or in modern German, but by their position before or after the verb.(Logan Pearsall Smith, The English Language, 1912) Basic Word Order in Modern English Assume you wanted to say that a chicken crossed the road in Modern English. And assume you are interested only in stating the factsno questions asked, no commands, and no passive. You wouldnt have much of a choice, would you? The most natural way of stating the message would be as in (18a), with the subject (in caps) preceding the verb (in boldface) which, in turn, precedes the object (in italics). For some speakers (18b) would be acceptable, too, but clearly more marked, with particular emphasis on the road. Many other speakers would prefer to express such an emphasis by saying something like Its the road that the chicken crossed, or they would use a passive The road was crossed by the chicken. Other permutations of (18a) would be entirely unacceptable, such as (18c)-(18f). (18a) THE CHICKEN crossed the road[Basic, unmarked order](18b) the road THE CHICKEN crossed[Marked order; the road is in relief](18c) THE CHICKEN the road crossed*(18d) the road crossed THE CHICKEN*[But note constructions like: Out of the cave came A TIGER.](18e) crossed the road THE CHICKEN*(18f) crossed THE CHICKEN the road* In this respect, Modern English differs markedly from the majority of the early Indo-European languages, as well as from Old English, especially the very archaic stage of Old English found in the famous epic Beowulf. In these languages, any of the six different orders in (18) would be acceptable . . ..(Hans Henrich Hock and Brian D. Joseph, Language History, Language Change, and Language Relationship: An Introduction to Historical and Comparative Linguistics. Mouton de Gruyter, 1996) Word Order in Old English, Middle English, and Modern English Certainly, word order is critical in Modern English. Recall the famous example: The dog bit the man. This utterance means something totally different from The man bit the dog. In Old English, word endings conveyed which creature is doing the biting and which is being bitten, so there was built-in flexibility for word order. Inflection telling us dog-subject bites man-object allows words to be switched around without confusion: man-object bites dog-subject. Alerted that the man is the object of the verb, we can hold him in mind as the recipient of a bite made by a subject we know will be revealed next: dog.By the time English evolved into Middle English, loss of inflection meant that nouns no longer contained much grammatical information. On its own, the word man could be a subject or an object, or even an indirect object (as in The dog fetched the man a bone). To compensate for this loss of information that inflection has provided, word order became critically important. If the man a ppears after the verb bite, we know hes not the one doing the biting: The dog bit the man. Indeed, having lost so much inflection, Modern English relies heavily on word order to convey grammatical information. And it doesnt much like having its conventional word order upset.à (Leslie Dunton-Downer, The English Is Coming!: How One Language Is Sweeping the World. Simon Schuster, 2010) Adverbials One way to find out whether a sentence part is a subject or not is to make the sentence into aà question. The subject will appear after the first verb: He told me to add one tablespoon of honey per pound of fruit.Did he tell me . . .?We spread a thin layer of fruit on each plate.Did we spread . . .? The only constituent that may occur in many different places is an adverbial. Especially one-word adverbials like not, always, and often may occur almost anywhere in the sentence. In order to see if a sentence part is an adverbial or not, see if it is possible to move it in the sentence.(Marjolijn Verspoor and Kim Sauter, English Sentence Analysis: An Introductory Course. John Benjamins, 2000) The Lighter Side of Word Order in Monty Pythons Flying Circus Burrows: Good doctor morning! Nice year for the time of day!Dr. Thripshaw: Come in.Burrows: Can I down sit?ââ¬â¹Dr. Thripshaw: Certainly. Well, then?Burrows: Well, now, not going to bush the doctor about the beat too long. Im going to come to point the straight immediately.Dr. Thripshaw: Good, good.Burrows: My particular prob, or buglem bear, Ive had ages. For years, Ive had it for donkeys.Dr. Thripshaw: What?Burrows: Im up to here with it, Im sick to death. Firstly, and most obviously, calcium as well as vitamin K and vitamin D are the most basic and important building blocks of proper bone strength and nutrition. Although calcium is what is primarily focused upon with regards to maintaining proper bone density and health, both vitamin K and vitamin D help to regulate the levels of calcium in the blood stream as well as to encourage and discourage the way that this calcium is synthesized within the bone marrow itself (Marian 440). Although this vitamin and nutrient are often mentioned in the same breath with bone health and nutrition, few individuals understand the processes that each of these play in proper bone health. Firstly, vitamin D is converted to what is known as calcidiol in the liver. Once this conversion has taken place, the calcidiol is then pumped through the blood stream with the sole intent of seeking to regulate the levels of calcium and phosphate that exist in the blood stream. Calcidiol acts in this way as a hormone to regulate levels of compounds that exist throughout the body (Price 143). By acting in this regulatory fashion, the body is able to make appropriate use of the calcium and phosphate levels that are in the blood stream in order to properly build strong bones. In the same way, vitamin K helps to control the level of calcium binding that takes place within the bone structure. Likewise, in addition to calcium and vitamin K, D, the body needs to maintain adequate levels of magnesium; the second most plentiful mineral, after calcium, in the skeleton. Magnesium has a host of applications with respect to bone health; however, for the purposes of this brief analysis it can understood to have a direct and profoundly important effect on the boney matrix that helps to give bones their density and vernonhamilton1946http://www.blogger.com/profile/17360454330130153249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8048443042540068253.post-72344060772464821832020-02-01T11:15:00.001-08:002020-02-01T11:15:03.138-08:00Manufacturing Processes Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 wordsManufacturing Processes - Assignment Example This paper produces a report on the utility and application of these tools to a manufacturing environment specifically bringing out the necessity of applying these principles and also to evaluate the exact reasons why such an analysis need to be done at all. For the purpose of outlining the manufacturing process we take the example of paper production processes. For manufacturing paper wood, bagasse (outer stalk sugar cane), hemp straw etc are used. Normally the paper manufacturing is preceded by the pulping process where the raw material for example wood is made into pulp. Pulping processes are generally classified as chemical, mechanical or semi-chemical. The three chemical pulping methods are known as kraft, sulfite and soda. There are three steps involved the pulping; initial processing, washing the pulp and bleaching the pulp. At the end of the processes several Toxic Air and Water Pollutants like Volatile Organic Compounds causing damages to lungs tissues, Total reduced Sulphur with foul odors, Hazardous Air Pollutants causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, Adsorbable Organic Halides Chloroform, Dioxin and Furan are generated. (EPA Fact Sheet 1997) 3.0 Life cycle Analysis (LCA): "LCA is a technique [] compiling an inventory of relevant inputs and outputs of a product system; evaluating the potential environmental impacts associated with those inputs and outputs; and interpreting the results of the inventory and impact phases in relation to the objectives of the study" (ISO 14040:2006) This part of the paper deals with an important tool for assessing the impact of the manufacturing processes on the environment. According to O'Neill (2003) Life Cycle Analysis is a technique used to quantify the environmental impact of products during their entire life cycle. The different parts of the life cycle are examined from raw material extraction, manufacture, transport and use through to waste processing. The publication of Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme envisages that LCA can be used to evaluate the environmental performance of processes, products and services1 from 'cradle to grave' and identify potential cost savings. It is relevant to most, if not all, industrial situations where a product is manufactured or a service provided. The figure below illustrates the life cycle stages: Karolina Flemstrom et al.(2004) opines that the effects of product or services considered in LCA are overall potential environmental impacts e.g. global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, acidification, photochemical oxidant formation, toxicity and eutrophication, of all resources used and waste generated in a defined technical system. To conduct an LCA it is essential that the following three interrelated components are identified and addressed during the LCA process: Life cycle Inventory: is the process of quantifying energy and raw material requirements, air emissions, waterborne effluents, solid waste vernonhamilton1946http://www.blogger.com/profile/17360454330130153249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8048443042540068253.post-67263028389453119072020-01-24T07:39:00.001-08:002020-01-24T07:39:03.578-08:00Chronic Hair Pulling Essay -- TrichotillomaniaIt has been two months since Makahla Rivers has pulled out her hair. In fact, thatââ¬â¢s the longest sheââ¬â¢s gone without pulling out her hair since she was 12 years old, she said. Rivers, a 19-year-old from Harrisville, Rhode Island who works in a local restaurant, has struggled with the impulse control disorder known as trichotillomania, the urge to pull out oneââ¬â¢s own hair. Trichotillomania, often referred to as trich or TTM, was first documented by the French dermatologist, Francois Henri Hallopeau over 100 years ago and derives from the Greek words, ââ¬Å"trichâ⬠(hair), ââ¬Å"tilloâ⬠(to pull) and ââ¬Å"maniaâ⬠(impulse). While extensive medical research on this disorder has only been conducted within the past twenty years, it is estimated that around 1.5% of males and 3.5% of females in the U.S. struggle with chronic hair pulling, according to the Trichotillomania Learning Center Web site. It is believed that the majority of hair pulling starts during childhood or around adolescence. This is a derived idea from the argument of Immanuel Kant in his work, An Answer to the Question: ââ¬Å"What is Enlightenment?â⬠This restriction is the reason why humans behave as they are: they need a harmonious environment within themselves as a pursuit of individual community of well-being, freedom and safety. Humans are not ultimately free as they could be because their actions have consequences. We may call these consequences, according to Kant, ââ¬Å"imperatives for actionsâ⬠. The reason ââ¬Å"why certain acts ought to be done is because they ought to be doneâ⬠(Stratton-Lake, 2000).Generally, a rational human being would do an action consciously for practical reasons, which is considered as hypothetically imperative. It demands that a person does such action for the sake of a purpose that he has in mind. Why Man should notà break promises, why should not tell lies, why and should not commit suicide? This is beca use Man ought not do these acts. à According to Kant, the reason why Man should keep his promises because of his ââ¬Å"obligation to be consistent and the injunction against using others (i.e., against treating them only as means)â⬠(Nasr, 2008). This is a concrete example of Kantââ¬â¢s Ought priciple of ethics.ââ¬Å"Act so that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in that of another, always as an end and never as a means onlyâ⬠(Kant, 1785). A true ethical person would not use people to further his own end and he treats otherà people with respect to a value of dignity and not a value of price because a person with a value of dignity cannot be replaced and their value is priceless. An object with a value of price, as what the hypothetically imperative person believes, can be exchanged and used as a means to achieve an end.To Kant, à this principle of humanity ââ¬Å"is the supreme limiting condition on the freedom of action of each man,â⬠and a rgues that the principle is not founded on experience but rather seated in the footholds of a priori reasoning, reasoning that comes before experience. Indeed, Manââ¬â¢s actions are limited and the ââ¬Å" theoretical Ought of our judgments about facts, like the practical Ought of Ethics, is after all definable only in terms of what Kant called the Autonomy of Willâ⬠(Royce, 1901).In fact, not only Kant recognized the limitations of the freedom of human Will and the actions that their will impose upon them and why Man obeys. Another philosopher who made a discourse on this ethical issue is Jonathan Edwards. He noted that there are ââ¬Å"ethics or the rulesâ⬠(Tappan 1839), which are, in fact, not compelled to be obeyed by everyone but impose a strong power upon the conscience of the majority, especially those who believes in an Almighty being and those who do not want to feel the uneasiness of the evil and the persecuting nature of the Man.Disobedience to these manly i mposed rules are considered as a ââ¬Å"state of sinfulnessâ⬠(Tappan 1839) or the corruption of human sensitivity disposed to violate the harmony and fitness of the spiritual constitution. This is another binding factor that makes man perform the hypothetically imperative actions.Does morality purely exist? Morality is something that is not strongly defined, yet it is considered as the ultimate commandment of reason and this is the guiding source for Manââ¬â¢s duties and obligations. Even Kant à argues à in his Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals that ââ¬Å"it is only a pure philosophy that we can look for the moral law in its purity and genuineness.â⬠Human beings have moral obligations to each other, and, as previously mentioned, because of reasons that they need and not because of their pure will to do such obligations. Man, to be good to each other without qualification would be a conceived as having a ââ¬Å"good willâ⬠(Kant, 1785) and i t must be understood, however, that humans do not have the autonomous will. They have the morally good will to attain the practical ends that they wish to have. Moral philosophies follow the ââ¬Å"laws of human willâ⬠as affected by nature and when applied to man, it does not borrow the least thing from the knowledge of man himself (anthropology), but gives laws a priori to him as a rational being. Moral laws require human judgment that has been sharpened through time and experience in order for them to be properly applied and for these laws to access the will of the man and ââ¬Å"effectual influence on conductâ⬠(Kant, 1785). The virtuous person does not only conform and obeys the moral law.He also act for the sake of the moral law itself. Manââ¬â¢s actions are morally right as determined by the virtue of their motives, derived not from Manââ¬â¢s inclinations but from Manââ¬â¢s duty. A virtuous person, who makes a morally right action, is determined to act in acc ordance with his duty and this duty overcomes that personââ¬â¢s self-interests and hidden desires. And for Kant, the Ought of Ethics is the defining factor for morality: ââ¬Å" the sense in which the conduct of moral aget is to be judged asà good or evil according as it does or does not conform to the standard of the Oughtâ⬠(Royce, 1901)As Kant have further argued in his philosophies, the ultimate moral law principle was abstractly conceived to guide man to the right action in lifeââ¬â¢s circumstances. However, if man is immature enough to acknowledge this guidance, enlightenment would never be achieved. Moreover, it is not only the lack of maturity that deter man and give him obstacles from being enlightened but also laziness, superstitious and dogmatic beliefs or fanaticism. ââ¬Å"Laziness and cowardice are the reasons why such a large proportion of men, even when nature has long emancipated them from alien guidance (naturaliter maiorennes), nevertheless gladly re main immature for lifeâ⬠(Kant, 1784).Enlightenment would result to freedom, and, if man is still of prejudices and dogmatic beliefs, Man would be nothing but an unthinking and leashed controlled being. Dogmas ââ¬Å"are the ball and chain of His permanent immaturity.â⬠(Kant, 1784) If Man stays immature and an obedient being without reason, he would be an object without dignity, a mere machine.Works CitedKant, Immanuel; translated by James W. It might be prudent to take note that not all people require the same level of outreach intervention. Although everyone can benefit from a child-rearing course, it has been shown that certain demographics may require more extensive education and support in order to successfully raise a child. Socioeconomic status (SES), a term often used interchangeably with demographics, has been shown to be a reliable predictor of parenting and the resulting path of child development. Iââ¬â¢m very pleased that I can celebrate this Eucharist with you. We know that every Mass is a beautiful time of encounter with Jesus when we want to open our ears and eyes and listen to his voice. In todayââ¬â¢s Gospel Mark will tell us the story of Jesus healing the deaf man who had a speech problem. And we would like to ask the Lord to help us to have eyes that see His gifts, ears that hear His Words, and love to respond. Let us confess our sinsâ⬠¦ Homily Every miracle that Jesus performed was unique. I think that in todayââ¬â¢s Gospel we can hear one of the most interesting miracles that Jesus performed. Mark tells us the story of Jesus healing the deaf man who had a speech problem. Jesusââ¬â¢ compassion is so great that when the man approaches him, He takes the man aside and heals him. And this is the first thing that can be very surprising and unique. But why does Jesus take the deaf man off by himself away from the crowd? It seems that it would be more effective to cure somebody in the presence of others. In this case everyone would be able to see and believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, that He is one who is sent from God, that He has divine power. But we see that Jesus thinks in very different way. For him itââ¬â¢s not so important human effectiveness but true and dense encounter with a person. She hurried to the front of the cell, holding the bronze bars as best she could with her bound hands. ââ¬Å"When are you going to let me go?â⬠I sat down against the hallââ¬â¢s wall, opposite her. I wondered if sheââ¬â¢d try any of her stunted magic with me around. ââ¬Å"When are you going to stop asking?â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re a real bitch, you know that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Look, little girl,â⬠I growled. ââ¬Å"You do not want to mess with me tonight. Iââ¬â¢m not in a good mood.â⬠Jasmine was undeterred. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t believe youââ¬â¢re keeping me in here with thatâ⬠¦that thing! Thatââ¬â¢s just cruel and sadistic.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wow, sadisticââ¬â¢s kind of a big word. I didnââ¬â¢t think youââ¬â¢d stayed in school long enough to learn that kind of vocabulary.â⬠Her glower darkened. ââ¬Å"When I get out, Iââ¬â¢m going to kill you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then you and ââ¬Ëthat thingââ¬â¢ should get along beautifully, seeing as he spends all his time plotting my grisly death too.â⬠She nodded down to her bound hands. ââ¬Å"I can barely feed myself, you know.â⬠ââ¬Å"Barely isnââ¬â¢t the same as canââ¬â¢t.â⬠But I did feel a little bad about that. Was I really going to keep her in cuffs forever? Yet, how could I not? Maybe I should investigate that potion Rurik had told me about. Noâ⬠¦that wasnââ¬â¢t right either. I sighed, and spent the next half-hour listening to her alternate between insults and whining. It was better than thinking about Kiyo, though. All the while, I was sobering up, so when Volusian finally appeared and handed me over a full bottle of Jose Cuervo, I gave silent thanks that Iââ¬â¢d purchased an extra-large bottle. ââ¬Å"Thanks,â⬠I said, rising to my feet. I pointed to Jasmineââ¬â¢s cell. ââ¬Å"Now-back to guard duty.â⬠I turned around without a second glance, Jasmineââ¬â¢s cries of outrage echoing behind me. Shaya, who had waited silently the whole time, fell in step with me as I walked back upstairs. ââ¬Å"Are you sure there isnââ¬â¢t anything I can do for you?â⬠I eyed the bottle. ââ¬Å"See if you can find some little glasses about this big.â⬠I held my fingers out to the size of a shot glass. ââ¬Å"And bring enough forâ⬠¦I donââ¬â¢t know. You, Rurikâ⬠¦hell, anyone who wants to get drunk with me. Even Ysabel.â⬠I was feeling magnanimous tonight. Or, well, at least in a misery-loves-company mood. Shayaââ¬â¢s face looked more troubled than ever, but I paid it little concern as I walked outside to a small circular courtyard in the castleââ¬â¢s center. This seemed to be a fixture in most gentry holdings. Dorian had a couple. Iââ¬â¢d been told that this one had been green in Aesonââ¬â¢s time, filled with lilies and lilacs. Now, it was sandy and gravelly, lined with cacti, mesquite, and even some of the thorn trees that had given the land its name. At least the mesquite scented the air, and I decided one perk of the Otherworld was that those trees always seemed to be in bloom. I sat down cross-legged in the middle of the courtyard, noticing that someone had started to set stone tiles into it to create a kind of patio area. It hadnââ¬â¢t been there last time, and I wondered if it was Shayaââ¬â¢s doing, just like the patches of grass she kept trying to grow around here. Not waiting for shot glasses, I uncapped the tequila and took a long swig, the strong liquor burning my throat. Shaya returned shortly, Rurik following. His face was uncharacteristically serious. After a brief moment of exchanged looks, they joined me on the tiled ground. Shaya set down some tiny cups made of engraved silver. Not quite shot glasses, but they would do. I took the bottle and filled three of them up. ââ¬Å"To the Willow Queen and her child,â⬠I said, holding my cup in the air. I downed it one gulp. You read "Thorn Queen Chapter Fifteen" in category "Essay examples" ââ¬Å"Damn. Wish I had some salt and lime.â⬠Shaya and Rurik exchanged glances once more-did they honestly think I didnââ¬â¢t notice each time?-and then followed my lead with the tequila. Rurik took his down stoically, but Shaya choked on hers. ââ¬Å"Whatâ⬠¦what is this?â⬠she asked, once she was able to speak. ââ¬Å"Godââ¬â¢s favorite liquor. I should have had Volusian run to the grocery store and get some margarita mix while he was out.â⬠I paused, laughing at the thought. I poured another shot. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s made from a kind of cactus, you know.â⬠Shaya eyed the bottle askance. ââ¬Å"Truly?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yup. Huh. I wonder if we could manufacture this stuff. Iââ¬â¢ve seen agave around. I bet we could set up some serious trade with it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not so certain,â⬠she said. Rurik was pouring another glass. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. It might appeal to some.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ah, Rurik. I knew we were kindred spirits.â⬠I held up my empty shot glass, studying the way the half-moonââ¬â¢s light shone on it. My head was regaining its pleasant buzz again. ââ¬Å"Do you think Maiwennââ¬â¢s going to have a boy or a girl?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know,â⬠said Shaya after several moments of silence. ââ¬Å"There are those who can magically determine such things. But I havenââ¬â¢t heard of the Willow Queen doing that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Probably not.â⬠Kiyo would have told me. Or would he have? Maybe he would have held on to that news, keeping it as a special secret between him and Maiwenn. I poured another shot but didnââ¬â¢t drink it yet. Shitfaced was one thing; sick was another. ââ¬Å"Back in my world, they would have known its gender a long time ago. They also would have been able to tell all sorts of things-its size, if it had any diseases, even if it was twins or triplets. Thereââ¬â¢s this machine weââ¬â¢ve got. You run a paddle over the motherââ¬â¢s stomach, and then you can see the baby up on this screen. Or, sometimes, even earlier, they can take a needle and suck up amniotic fluid to find out the same things.â⬠Rurik and Shaya were staring at me wide-eyed. It was a common expression amongst Otherworldly denizens whenever I began talking about human technology. ââ¬Å"I wonder sometimes if thereââ¬â¢s any mystery or wonder left in your world at all.â⬠I glanced over and saw Ysabelââ¬â¢s form silhouetted in the doorway to the castle. ââ¬Å"Oh, sure. Plenty of it.â⬠I gestured her over. ââ¬Å"Come have a drink. Iââ¬â¢m pretty sure Iââ¬â¢m too drunk to kill anyone tonight.â⬠Ysabel hesitated a few seconds and then slowly walked over, sitting near Rurik and Shaya, as far from me as she could respectfully go. She grimaced slightly at the tiles as she tucked her flowing silk skirts underneath her. No doubt being on the ground went against her fastidious nature. Rurik cheerfully handed her a tequila shot. She sniffed it, and her scowl returned. My mind was still on babies. ââ¬Å"Seems like ultrasounds would be useful to you guys. I mean, what with the trouble you have having kids.â⬠There was a good chance, I knew, that Maiwenn might not even survive the delivery. Or that her child wouldnââ¬â¢t. It was common among the gentry, sort of the cost for their long and healthy lives. I didnââ¬â¢t know how I felt about that. I didnââ¬â¢t wish death on either of themâ⬠¦and yet, how much simpler would things be if there was no Maiwenn and no baby? Even now, I could picture Kiyo by her side, holding her hand. His handsome face would be lined with worry as he spoke words of encouragement. Surely, with his human blood, their baby would be healthy and strong. And Maiwenn was a healerâ⬠¦. would that be useful to herself? Maybe. Everything would go well, I was certain, and theyââ¬â¢d undoubtedly have a beautiful baby, one that would create a bond between them forever, a bond I could never be a part ofâ⬠¦. I drank my next shot and noticed that Ysabel had manfully downed hers. ââ¬Å"Nice work,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"You want another?â⬠She shook her head. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t consider it ladylike to drown oneself in excess, losing hold of inhibitions and all sense of decorum.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course you donââ¬â¢t,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"I believe,â⬠she added primly, ââ¬Å"that the Willow Queen shares my views.â⬠I smiled, spinning my cup on the ground, watching in fascination as it turned in smaller and smaller circles before coming to a stop. With Maiwennââ¬â¢s baby consuming my thoughts, Ysabelââ¬â¢s baiting seemed insignificant tonight. We continued on for a while, Rurik keeping up with me in shots, with Shaya only occasionally indulging. Ysabel seemed to have lost her fear of me and continued her running commentary of barbed remarks. I think knowing I was in a fragile state over Maiwennââ¬â¢s labor had emboldened her. In fact, she was in the middle of some anecdote about how Kiyo and Maiwenn had first gotten involved when her words came to a halt, and her features lit up with surprise. ââ¬Å"My lord!â⬠she cried, springing up just as one of my servants began announcing, ââ¬Å"His royal majesty, King Dorian, of the House of Arkady, caller of earth-ââ¬Å" Dorian strode forward into the courtyard without waiting for his titles to finish. Ysabel fell to her knees before him, face radiant. ââ¬Å"My lord!â⬠He gave her a brief nod of acknowledgment and then swept on past her toward me. I donââ¬â¢t think anyone except me saw the devastation that filled her face over the slight. Shaya and Rurik began to rise out of courtesy, but Dorian quickly motioned them down. Unfastening his cloak-it appeared to be navy in the moonlight-he spread it on the ground and sat beside me. ââ¬Å"Well, well, a party, and no one invited me.â⬠ââ¬Å"It was kind of impromptu,â⬠I said, reaching over to pour him a shot. My hand trembled as I held the bottle. Dorian took it from me and finished pouring. He eyed me carefully. ââ¬Å"And yet, it appears to have been going on for some time.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. Weââ¬â¢re toasting the birth of the next king or queen of the Willow Land.â⬠ââ¬Å"So Iââ¬â¢ve heard, which is why I came to see how the news was received here.â⬠Dorian tossed back the tequila. His eyebrows rose in surprise at the taste, but it didnââ¬â¢t stop him from pouring another. ââ¬Å"And donââ¬â¢t presume her child will inherit. It all depends on strength and power.â⬠His words reminded me distantly of Leithââ¬â¢s own inheritance problems, which then reminded me of Leithââ¬â¢s declaration of love. Ugh. Iââ¬â¢d probably killed our one chance at engineering help. Well, that was a concern for another day. ââ¬Å"Howââ¬â¢d you get here so fast?â⬠I asked Dorian. ââ¬Å"Not that fast. I heard hours ago.â⬠Hours ago. Dorian had found out before I had. Probably everyone had. Who was I, after all? Certainly no one who was connected to this birth. I was just another monarch whoââ¬â¢d be expected to send jewels or tapestries when the baby was born. I poured another shot, but Shaya reached for it. ââ¬Å"May I have another?â⬠She wasnââ¬â¢t a fan of this stuff, but I had a feeling she wanted to stop me from drinking any more. Oh, well. There appeared to be about one more shot in the bottle-though Dorian beat me to that one too. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ll make yourself sick,â⬠I warned, reaching for the bottle. Only a few drops poured into my cup. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll take my chances. This is a fascinating substance.â⬠ââ¬Å"It comes from cacti,â⬠I said helpfully, hoping it might deter him from that last shot. It didnââ¬â¢t. ââ¬Å"Intriguing,â⬠he said after downing it. ââ¬Å"You should try producing it here. Iââ¬â¢m certain a number of people would trade for it.â⬠I couldnââ¬â¢t be certain in the near-darkness, but it looked like Shaya rolled her eyes. Part of me resented Dorianââ¬â¢s presence, though I had to admit that he did a good job in keeping the subject away from Maiwenn and Kiyo. That didnââ¬â¢t stop me from thinking about them, of course, but I couldnââ¬â¢t help but smile as he entertained the others. Whether it was part of being a king or just something inherently Dorian, he had a powerful charisma about him that could make everyone laugh and stay captivated. With my social reticence, his were skills I admired-and occasionally envied. As the night wore on, though, I could feel the tequilaââ¬â¢s effects lessening a little. That wasnââ¬â¢t to say I still wasnââ¬â¢t drunk as hell; Iââ¬â¢d taken down half that bottle myself. But, I wanted to go to bed while I was still in that delirious haze. It didnââ¬â¢t stop me from feeling down over Kiyo, but I had to imagine being sober would be worse. Everyone stood up when I did, and I felt my legs struggle for balance. ââ¬Å"Let me assist you,â⬠said Shaya, reaching toward me. Dorian intervened before she could help. ââ¬Å"No, no. Allow me to guide the Thorn Queen to her room. Iââ¬â¢d like a few words.â⬠Ysabelââ¬â¢s face darkened at this, and he gave her a chastising look. ââ¬Å"Oh, stop it. Iââ¬â¢ll come to you shortly-provided Eugenie will allow me to stay overnight in her castle.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure, sure,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Come on over. Make yourself at home. Pick out curtains.â⬠He extended his arm to me, and I decided the indignity of letting Dorian guide me was less than that of me falling over in front of my servants. Ysabelââ¬â¢s eyes followed us furiously, and I couldnââ¬â¢t blame her. If my boyfriend were taking a drunk woman to her bedroom, Iââ¬â¢d be pissed too. ââ¬Å"It was very high-handed of you to think I needed your moral support,â⬠I told him once we were out of earshot of the others. ââ¬Å"Right. You only need the moral support of a bottle,â⬠he teased. ââ¬Å"Be honest, Eugenie. Your loverââ¬â¢s at the side of a former lover, eagerly awaiting the birth of their child. Iââ¬â¢d be distressed as well.â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing distresses you,â⬠I grumbled. We reached my room, and he followed me in without invitation. ââ¬Å"Plenty of things do,â⬠he said. He frowned, ever so slightly, and it occurred to me he was none too sober himself. I let go of his arm and walked over to the full-length mirror that stood on one side of the room, edged in gold. Iââ¬â¢d pinned up my hair earlier and let it down now, wondering if I wanted to bother with sending Nia for a nightgown or if Iââ¬â¢d just sleep in my clothes. Standing there, I stared at my body, thinking again of my motherââ¬â¢s claims that I was too skinny. I always argued it was an athletic build. Running my hands over the sides of my stomach and down to my hips, I studied my figure. Whatever you wanted to call it, it was slim. ââ¬Å"I can never do that for him,â⬠I said in a small voice. ââ¬Å"I can never give him a baby like she can.â⬠Dorian strolled over and stood behind me, meeting my eyes in the mirror. ââ¬Å"Do you want to?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. Kids were never on my radarâ⬠¦it was always a ââ¬Ëmaybe somedayââ¬â¢ kind of thing. But nowâ⬠¦knowing I canââ¬â¢tâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ My hips and stomach suddenly seemed as unhealthily skinny as my mother had always said. They would remain untouched and infertile, never filling out with the kind of life Maiwennââ¬â¢s had. I would never share that with Kiyo. I flinched as Dorian reached from behind and placed his hands on the narrowest part of my waist. He rested his head on my shoulder, and I was too weary to shoo him away. ââ¬Å"You speak like someone whoââ¬â¢s been condemned with infertility or like youââ¬â¢ve passed your prime.â⬠ââ¬Å"I might as well be.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s not true. Youââ¬â¢re young. You radiate health and fertility. You could have a dozen children.â⬠I shook my head slowly. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t,â⬠I said sadly. ââ¬Å"I wonââ¬â¢t. You know I wonââ¬â¢t, no matter how much you and every other Otherworldly creature want me to.â⬠ââ¬Å"Maybe youââ¬â¢d have a daughter.â⬠ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t take the risk.â⬠I knew Iââ¬â¢d never be confiding in him sober. ââ¬Å"And what if Kiyo decides he doesnââ¬â¢t want that-to be with someone whoââ¬â¢s always going to be childless? What if he wants more kids? Maybe this babyâ⬠¦Maybe heââ¬â¢ll go back to Maiwenn. Maybeâ⬠¦maybe heââ¬â¢ll leave meâ⬠¦.â⬠I could feel tears forming in my eyes and hated myself for the weakness. Dorian tightened his grip on my waist. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢d be a fool. And youââ¬â¢d be a fool to mourn him if he did. Youââ¬â¢re more than a childbearing vessel.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not the way everyone talks. Not the way you talk.â⬠To my shock, Dorian spun me around. Still gripping me, he pressed his forehead to mine so that only an inch was between us. I could smell the tequila on his breath, no doubt mirroring my own. ââ¬Å"Eugenie, youââ¬â¢re a woman without equal, and no matter how much you annoy the hell out of me and no matter how much I try to get you out of my head-and believe me, both occur regularly-I canââ¬â¢t stay away from you. Even if you were barren, Iââ¬â¢d take you as my consort in an instant and spend the rest of my life with you-childless, so long as it meant youââ¬â¢d be by my side. I would gladly bring you to my bed with no other thoughts than taking joy from your body. It would be enough.â⬠I swallowed. ââ¬Å"But youââ¬â¢re withâ⬠¦I mean, what aboutâ⬠¦what about Ysabel? She can have kidsâ⬠¦.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ysabel,â⬠he said dismissively, ââ¬Å"is nothing. A pale imitation of you-and not even a good one at that.â⬠That was harsh of him, but it filled me with something warm and loved and special. I realized then that no matter the bantering, sexual tension, and many schemes, Dorian really was my friend. I also realized that I wanted so badly then for him to kiss me, to crush his body against mine and run his hands along my bare skin. I wanted to have sex with him against the wall, on the bed, on the floorâ⬠¦it honestly didnââ¬â¢t matter, so long as our bodies were joined, and I could feel him in meâ⬠¦. Whoa. I jerked away, my heart racing, barely stopping myself from doing something Iââ¬â¢d regret. Deciding he was my friend was one thing; jumping into bed was another. I knew it was the tequila and my worry over Kiyo causing this. I didnââ¬â¢t want to be with Dorian again; I couldnââ¬â¢t be. Even if he claimed it would be for love and pleasure, I knew it could never be that simple. There would always be politics and schemesâ⬠¦. And so, I did the most unsexy thing I could. I summoned Volusian. The icy, dark presence of my minion caught even Dorian by surprise, and he took a step back. It was the Otherworldly equivalent of a cold shower. Volusianââ¬â¢s eyes flicked to him and then turned back to me. ââ¬Å"My mistress requires more intoxication,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠My magical hold on him trembled ever so slightly. It was nowhere near enough for me to lose control, but the alcohol messed with my power a bit. ââ¬Å"I wanted you to go to the Willow Land and see if thereââ¬â¢s any news.â⬠ââ¬Å"More romantic errands.â⬠ââ¬Å"Just go,â⬠I snapped, trying to sound as harsh and commanding as I could. As soon as Volusian was gone, Dorian strode angrily to me, all traces of sensuality gone. ââ¬Å"That was stupid, Eugenie. You shouldnââ¬â¢t have summoned him after drinking so much.â⬠I turned away from him. ââ¬Å"I need to find out whatââ¬â¢s going on.â⬠ââ¬Å"You need to banish him. Youââ¬â¢re going to regret keeping him someday.â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s useful,â⬠I protested. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t need any lectures. You should go to Ysabel now. I donââ¬â¢t need any more declarations of love today.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh?â⬠His light tone returned. ââ¬Å"Had a few of those today?â⬠ââ¬Å"Leith,â⬠I admitted. ââ¬Å"He came by tonight to profess his undying devotion and see if he had a chance with me.â⬠Dorianââ¬â¢s green eyes watched me carefully. ââ¬Å"And?â⬠ââ¬Å"And, of course not. I had to tell him no a few times before he finally got it.â⬠Dorian didnââ¬â¢t bother hiding his satisfaction. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve broken the poor boyââ¬â¢s heart. And his motherââ¬â¢s, no doubt. Thereââ¬â¢ll be no ball now. Would you like me to throw one instead?â⬠ââ¬Å"No.â⬠My sadness was turning into irritability. ââ¬Å"I want you to leave. Go to Ysabel and paint her or tie her up or whatever it is you do together. Iââ¬â¢m tired and want to go to bed. Alone.â⬠To my surprise, Dorian didnââ¬â¢t protest. Much. ââ¬Å"As you wish. If you need me, you know where Iââ¬â¢ll be.â⬠ââ¬Å"It would take a lot for me to interrupt you,â⬠I said dryly. Dorian gave me one of his knowing, sly smiles and then left without another word. The thought of him going to Ysabelââ¬â¢s bed troubled me more than I would have liked. Heââ¬â¢d barely been gone a few minutes when Volusian returned. ââ¬Å"Well?â⬠I asked. My stomach was queasy. I didnââ¬â¢t know what I wanted to hear. If it was in Volusianââ¬â¢s nature to smile, I swear, he would have. ââ¬Å"The servants of the Willow Land report joyfully that their queen has given birth to a daughter. All are healthy and well.â⬠My body went perfect still, and for a moment, I saw nothing in the room except those glowing red eyes. Finally, I snapped back to myself. ââ¬Å"Thank you, Volusian.â⬠ââ¬Å"Does my mistress require me to learn anything else about this joyous occasion?â⬠There was a sneer in his voice. ââ¬Å"No. Go back to Jasmine. Now.â⬠He obeyed, leaving me alone. I sat on the bed for several minutes, thinking of everything and nothing. I felt numb. I felt every emotion in the world. And when I suddenly ripped the air from the room and used it to smash a vase against the wall, I couldnââ¬â¢t say if it was because of Dorian or Kiyo. Merck currently has two reportable segments, the Pharmaceutical Segment and the Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Segment. Merck sells products through several channels including wholesalers, retailers, hospitals, clinics, government and managed health services providers. In the 1980ââ¬â¢s the Merck was very successful in producing 10 major new drugs and had a very healthy pipeline. In later years, Merck has entered into joint ventures with many other pharmaceutical companies in order to expand its pipeline. In the last several years Merck has experienced a decline in revue do to several of their exclusive drugs going off-patent. Merck is currently the eighth largest pharmaceutical firm in the world. In 2009, Merck plans to further expand through a merger with Schering-Plough. This will make Merck the second largest pharmaceutical company in the world. Mission Statement Analysis The mission of Merck is to provide society with superior products and services by developing innovation and solutions that improve the quality of life and satisfy customer needs, and to provide employees with meaningful work and advancement opportunities, and investors with a superior rate of return. â⬠Merckââ¬â¢s mission statement touches on many of the key factors that a mission statement should embody. The mission statement mentions providing society with superior products. In the pharmaceutical industry, Merckââ¬â¢s customers are anyone in society that may benefit from one of its products. The mission statement focuses on the people their business may affect including customers, investors and employees. Although Merck is a well known company, the mission statement does not describe the nature of the business in which they operate. As the statement mentions their business os to improve the quality of life, this could describe many businesses and products. The statement also neglects to mention the focus and market segments in which they compete. Internal Assessment Strengths Diversified Business Segments ââ¬â Merck has business segments in Pharmaceuticals, Vaccines, Animal Health and Consumer Health. This allows Merck to diversify its revenue streams. The consumer health division allows Merck to compete outside the prescription drug market. Merck continually works o diversify its portfolio through internal and external ventures. In 2008, Merck focused on new Bio Ventures Division, which uses a unique technology platform for new and follow-on biologics. (Merck 2008 10K) * Strong Research and Development ââ¬â Merck spent an average of $4. B on research and development over the last three years. Their research and development efforts not only work to create new products that will help better their customersââ¬â¢ living, but also work to find additional uses for existing drugs which will extend the patent life and preserve existing revenue streams. * Increased presence in emerging markets through the merger with Schering-Plough. As Merck is seeing a decline in domestic revenue, due to the expiration of patents, such as Flosamax in 2006, they are concentrating more on growth opportunities in emerging markets. Increased pipeline in vaccines and biologics through the merger with Schering-Plough. As two of Merckââ¬â¢s most profitable drugs are coming off patent in the next four years, accounting for 35% of forecasted revenue, by merging with Schering-Plough, Merckââ¬â¢s revenue from expiring patents is reduced to 21%. * Distribution Channels ââ¬â Merck has well established distribution channels in which the companyââ¬â¢s professional representatives communicate the effectiveness and value of their products. They market and sell though a variety of channels including drug wholesalers, hospitals, physician distributers and government entities. Weaknesses * Research and Development ââ¬â although Merck spends in upward of $4B on research and development annually, the pharmaceutical business is heavily reliant on the success of a costly R amp; D department. In the last several years, Merckââ¬â¢s individual R amp;D department has not been able to keep pace with declining revenues from existing products. It is only through Mergers and Acquisitions that Merck has supplemented this income. Large Balance, $1. 4B in goodwill on Merckââ¬â¢s Balance Sheet ââ¬â the goodwill on Merckââ¬â¢s balance sheet is primarily attributable to past acquisitions. * Almost $4B in long-term debt on the balance sheet * Patent Expiration in the next four years, the two highest sales producing pharmaceutical products will go off patent. Patents on Merckââ¬â¢s Cozaar and Singulair will expire in February 2010 and August 2012, respectively, exposing about $8. 2 billion worth of sales to generic competition. This equates to about 35% of Merckââ¬â¢s forecasted revenue in 2012 [and 29% of 2009 revenues]. Competitive Pricing ââ¬â Merck is sometimes forced to lower prices of products, either ones that have gone off patent to maintain market share in the product, as well as for products that are still on patent in order to compete with rival products for the same treatment that are marketed by competitors The Internal Factor Evaluation Matrix Based on the IFE Matrix, Merck registers a score of 2. 5 which is an average score. This indicates that Merck is steady in its control of the internal factors that affect its operations. It also indicates that there is room for improvement in these areas and that a strategy should be formulated to maximize their strengths and minimize the companyââ¬â¢s weaknesses. The factors that strongly hurt Merckââ¬â¢s rating are the expensive cost of research and development for the company, which is key to its success. Additionally the expiration of patents on strong revenue producing products makes it critical to replace that revenue in order to continue on pace. External Assessment Opportunities * Demographic: The aging of America can be an opportunity for Merck. As the baby boomer generation is reaching its retirement age, the population is shifting to a greater number of people in their sixties and older. Statistics show that the over 65 age group uses three times more drugs than the younger population. As Merck has had success in arthritis and cholesterol medicines already, there is going to be a greater demand for drugs that make living longer possible as well as more comfortable. * Viruses and Epidemics: As Merckââ¬â¢s sales from vaccines and infections increases, there are opportunities for Merck to capitalize on new epidemics. The recent history of the H1N1 flu virus made the production of a new flu vaccine very profitable for some firms that had the capacity to produce it rapidly. * Advertising ââ¬â the permitting of DTC (direct-to consumer) advertising is allowing pharmaceutical companies the opportunity to reach out directly to consumers and educate them on the available drugs and they may enhance their lives. Additionally it also discusses the side effects of the side effects of the drugs and how they may interact with existing drugs and conditions in oneââ¬â¢s life. Emerging Markets Merck is focused on increasing its presence in emerging market. They have shifted their investments from mature market to emerging markets. In 2008, while their domestic sales declined 9%, foreign sales rose 10% (Merck 2008 10K). * Mergers and Acquisitions ââ¬â Merck and many other big pharma companies have trended towards acquiring other competitors in order to strengthen their pipelines and diversify their product base. Merckââ¬â¢s merger with Schering-Plough will increases its presences in the biologics field of vaccines. Threats * Increased Government Regulation Beginning in 2009, the FDA implemented a series of reforms that include stricter monitoring of drug adverse events, more funding for the agency, stronger ability to force product recalls, more scientific expertise within the agency, more transparency. While the tightened regulations and increased transparency will eventually improve the overall quality of pharmaceutical products, companies will have to adjust to the stricter standards and stronger enforcement Lawsuits. The possibility of a lawsuit due to side-effects of the products Merck provides to consumers is a serious threat. The 2007 settlement of the Vioxx Lawsuit cost Merck $750 million in settlements to date. Additionally there are several other ongoing lawsuits which Merck is a currently undergoing. * Generic Drug Products ââ¬â The threat of a less expensive substitute product is always a possibility in the pharmaceutical industry. Not only do companyââ¬â¢s scramble to reproduce existing products once they go off patent, but other substitute generics are sometimes vailable to threat the same illnesses at a lower cost. Other consumer supply channels: the aging of the population has also given rise to an increased need for cheaper drugs. The high cost of prescription drugs in the United States, has forced customers to look elsewhere, mainly Canada. * Economic Forces ââ¬â with a recession beginning in 2008 and the high unemployment rates, there is a decline in US spending and customers who have insurance. This lack of insurance can cause potential customers to forgo medical treatments or uses cheaper generic substitutes. The External Factor Evaluation Matrix The external factor evaluation matrix suggests that Merck does a slightly above average job at dealing with extern forces that impact their business. The key drivers of their external score are the changing demographics of the population which indicate a growing need for the products Merck provides. Additionally focuses on new markets and expanding globally should provide new revenue streams for Merck. In order to maintain and expand growth potential, mergers, joint ventures and collaborations with competitors are key strategies that Merck should capitalize on. The results of the Competitive Profile Matrix (CPM) reveal the Merck excels in segment/ product diversity. Its consumer products division, vaccines and pharmaceuticals division offer differentiation in products and revenue streams. The CPM also reveals that Merck needs to focus its resources and strategy on improving global expansion and its pipeline to counteract expiring patents. Competitive Analysis: Porters Five Forces Rivalry among competing firms ââ¬â The Pharmaceutical business is highly competitive and the high cost of Research and Development makes it difficult to compete in the industry. Merck competes with rivals on several of their main revenue producing drugs, for example, Merckââ¬â¢s Zocor, used to treat high cholesterol is in direct competition with Pfizerââ¬â¢s Lipitor. Merck is also faces direct competition from new products that competitors may develop that treat the same diseases better or have less side-effects. Potential entry of new competitors ââ¬â As the cost of producing new pharmaceutical products is high, it is difficult to enter in the business. The threat of new entrants merges from generic drug manufacturers entering into the same drug production as Merck after products are released from patent protection. Potential development of substitute products Competition for existing drugs, even those protected by patents is fierce given that the number of compounds available to treat diseases increases annually. Additionally generics are rapidly being developed to replicate existing products when they come off patent. There is also a push from many generic drug producers to argue for products to be released from patent earlier than the initial patent expiration date. This can have an adverse impact on projected revenues for Merck. Bargaining power of suppliers ââ¬â Merck is subject to certain restrictions when dealing with suppliers. It needs to work only with suppliers that comply with current Good Manufacturing practices and other regulations. This restricts the available suppliers for Merck and gives their suppliers bargaining power. Bargaining power of consumers ââ¬â Merck faces pressure from customers where there are alternate products or alternate channels to obtain certain drugs. vernonhamilton1946http://www.blogger.com/profile/17360454330130153249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8048443042540068253.post-26876162256147571412019-11-29T01:26:00.001-08:002019-11-29T01:26:05.507-08:00Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Influence On Twentieth Century Detective Liter Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Influence On Twentieth Century Detective Literature There are many different books, in many different genres. There are horror novels, love stories, suspenseful books, and detective stories. The detective story's evolution has been a long and eventful process. The man responsible for the biggest leap in the detective story was Arthur Conan Doyle. He gave the world Sherlock Holmes, who could be considered the greatest investigator in detective story history. Holmes was unique in detective story history. ... The reader's interest is captivated not only by the detective's unique methods, but to perhaps to even a greater degree by the singular personality of this remarkable man (Sayers 10). Doyle also gave the world Dr. Watson, Holmes' sidekick. Other authors could have written about this pair, but none could match Doyle. Doyle was a master storyteller (Snow, 8). Without Doyle the detective story would never have been what it is now. Cresterton states, With Conan Doyle, the detective story at last came to full fruition (Cresterton, 170). This statement is true. All detective stories after Doyle's had some of the aspects of his stories. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle shaped the way detective stories were written in the twentieth century by using a third person limited perspective, using a structured plot line, and by having Holmes investigate crimes other than murder. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the first detective story author to make good use of the third person limited perspective. Holmes' sidekick Watson is a smart man, but he could not compare to the brilliance of Holmes. When Holmes was figuring out a mystery, he often left Watson very confused. Holmes would do things that, to Watson, would make no sense. At the end of the story, however, Watson would see the logic behind Holmes' actions. This quote is Watson thinking about the case he and Holmes were working on. Here I had heard what he had heard, I had seen what he had seen, and yet from his words it was evident that he saw clearly not only what happened, but what was about to happen, while to me the whole business was still confused and grotesque (Doyle, 35). This displays Watson's confusion over the case of The Red-Headed League. In The Red-Headed League, the case is so bizarre that most of the readers, like Watson, don't have a clue as to what is going on. It is comforting to know that Watson is as confused as the readers are. In The Red-Headed League there is a point in the story where Holmes and Watson walk up to the pawn shop and talk to Mr. Wilson's assistant. After he shuts the door Watson asks Holmes why he wanted to see the assistant. Holmes says that he wanted to see the knees of the assistants trousers (Doyle, 34). It is obvious by Watson's reaction that he has know idea why Holmes wanted to see the assistants knees. At the same time the readers are left pondering that very question. The whole scene in front of the pawnshop also display another way that Doyle uses the third person limited perspective well. At that point in the story Holmes has pretty much figured out what happened. By telling Watson where he was looking, Holmes was dropping a hint to Watson to see if he could figure out what Holmes already had. During his stories Doyle would leave hints as to who committed the crime. This made the story more interesting for the readers. Another way Doyle uses Holmes in his stories is as a teacher to Watson. In the very beginning of A Scandal in Bohemia Holmes deduces, from a quick glance, that Watson had gotten wet lately, and had a clumsy servant girl. He deduced all of this by merely looking at Watson's shoes. He then asked Watson how many steps led up to his apartment. Watson could not say, even though he had walked up those stairs countless times (Doyle, 12). This is one of the examples of Holmes teaching Watson about observation. The only way that Holmes' observations make sense in the story is if the story has a structured plot line. Doyle made all of Holmes' stories have plots that follow a logical structure. You have reasoned it out beautifully...It is so long a chain, and yet every link rings true (Doyle 40). In the story Holmes figured out that Mr. Wilson's assistant was using his pawn shop to tunnel his way into a nearby bank and rob it. Holmes figured out all of vernonhamilton1946http://www.blogger.com/profile/17360454330130153249noreply@blogger.com0
